How to Tell Your Thermostat Is Causing Trouble

Have you ever played a video game and had your controller start malfunctioning? You try to make your character jump and instead they run right into a pit! Having a faulty thermostat is something like that albeit less dangerous. You want to heat up the home without a high bill but instead, find the house is still chilly while your bills are higher than normal!

Having trouble with any part of your heating system can be bothersome and expensive. This is why we encourage you to address issues sooner than later as it will allow you to prevent money lost on increased energy bills. The key is figuring out what the source of your comfort trouble is.

Here are some of the indicators that will tell you if your thermostat is the part of your heating system that is creating trouble.

How to Tell Something May Be Wrong With Your Thermostat

The thermostat is like the brains of our comfort operation. And while it may still be working, a malfunction can create a good deal of trouble and eventually lead to a complete breakdown. Here are some of the warning signs to watch for that will alert you to the fact that your thermostat is the one creating problems for your comfort level.

  • There are temperature changes on your thermostat. You set your thermostat to 65 and check on it later to discover it reset itself to 70. Either your thermostat is gaining a personality or it needs repairs.
  • There is a delayed response. You try to turn on your thermostat and it forces you to wait a long time before providing any response to you. That’s a problem!
  • It has become miscalibrated. Over time, your thermostat may become miscalibrated, resulting in discrepancies between the real temperature in the house and what the thermostat reads. This will obviously lead to some major problems with your comfort level!
  • Your thermostat responds but your system doesn’t: Yes, this can still indicate a problem with your thermostat–namely that it may have become disconnected from the rest of your HVAC system!
