5 Signs Your AC Is in Trouble

You probably don’t give your air conditioner much thought until something goes wrong, and then it’s all you can think about. But when you pay attention to how your air conditioner operates, you can easily identify signs that something is wrong before the situation becomes an emergency.

Just give our team a call to schedule air conditioning repair in Campbell County, WY anytime you need us. You can keep reading to learn more about the top five red flags that something is wrong with your air conditioner. Giving us a call sooner rather than later when you notice any or all of these things is the best way to prevent a complete system breakdown.

Unusual Sounds

Unusual sounds are one of the easiest ways to identify a problem with your air conditioner. Anytime you hear a sound that is out of the ordinary, something may be wrong with your air conditioner. Sometimes you hear a loud or unusual sound just one time and then you don’t hear it again.

Other times, your air conditioner can make a persistent sound that you just can’t ignore, even if it is not particularly loud or alarming. Either way, it is always better to call and schedule a service appointment to have the sound checked out rather than to ignore it and hope for the best.

Poor Output

It’s also a bad sign if your air conditioner’s output changes. In some cases, this could mean that the airflow becomes weak so that if you hold your hand up to an air vent, the stream of airflow doesn’t feel strong. Other times, you can feel a strong stream of airflow but it is not as cool as usual.

Instead, it may be lukewarm. These problems can be a little more difficult to identify because your home may still feel reasonably comfortable. But your air conditioner is likely working much harder than it usually does, straining the components.

Short Cycling

This is another problem that can be hard to identify unless you are really paying attention. Short cycling happens when your air conditioner turns on and off frequently. Usually, your air conditioner will stay on for cooling cycles that last 15-20 minutes. Short cycling happens if your air conditioner turns on and off every 5-10 minutes instead. The motor inside was not designed to turn on and off so quickly and your system can break down very quickly when it operates like this over a period of time.

High Energy Costs

This can be a little bit more of an indirect sign that your air conditioner is experiencing problems. But, high energy costs can easily be attributed to your air conditioner, since it is likely the largest appliance in your home consuming energy. If you’ve noticed an increase in your energy bills that concerns you and don’t know the cause, then may be a good idea to get your air conditioner checked out just to be vigilant.

Leaks or Moisture

Leaks or moisture developing inside your air conditioner are both also reasons to be concerned. A leak can mean that your condensate drain line is clogged and water is backing up into your house instead of draining outside. Moisture inside of your system can also point toward a condensate drain clog.

However, instead of water leaking out, it may simply be re-evaporating into your system and causing condensation. The problem with leaks and moisture is that they can encourage mold and mildew growth, posing health hazards to your family.
